Position: Reporter – General Assignment / Spokane Valley
Status: Full-time
Salary: $42,000-48,000 annually
Location: Spokane, WA – Primarily field-based with in-newsroom collaboration

About this role:
We’re looking for a curious and community-minded journalist to join our Metro team and bring the stories of Spokane Valley to life. This beat is a dynamic mix of city government, business, culture, and daily news. You’ll write deeply reported pieces that inform and inspire, while also tackling general assignment stories that go beyond city limits. If you love the idea of being out in the community, building sources, and writing stories that matter—this could be the role for you.

What you'll do:

• Report on Spokane Valley, producing at least two beat-related stories and three or more general assignment pieces per week.
• Attend city council, planning, and zoning meetings and report on development projects and public feedback.
• Build strong sources within Spokane Valley and beyond, staying ahead of the news with fresh, engaging angles.
• Localize national stories when relevant and respond quickly when needed.
• File clear, concise, self-edited stories—fast turnaround when breaking news hits.
• Take photos, video, or audio with a mobile device to complement your reporting.
• Collaborate with editors and visuals team to improve audience engagement through layout, art, and design.
• Post stories online with effective SEO headlines, summaries, and social shareability.
• Engage with readers post-publication to answer questions, gather follow-ups, or explore new leads.
• Represent The Spokesman-Review at community events, acting as a liaison with readers, stakeholders, and sources.

What you'll contribute to our team:

• A bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent newsroom experience
• Strong writing and reporting skills with the ability to explain complex topics clearly
• Working knowledge of digital publishing tools (CMS, SEO, social media)
• Comfort using a smartphone to file stories, photos, and video from the field
• Organizational skills to manage multiple assignments and changing deadlines
• Willingness to work nontraditional hours and adapt quickly to breaking news
• A sense of initiative, creativity, and respect for journalistic integrity and ethics
